Lesson One in Twelve 15 Minute Topics.
Silence runs in families, it's not permitted to talk about the obesity of other family members. "It's none of your business." We've got unhealthy children, adults developing diabetes, older people with joint problems, loss of strength, living with pain, and Alzheimer's disease coming and NOBODY ELSE can say "STOP THIS".
YOU CAN; not for other people, for YOURSELF.
If you were really healthy, you would sleep well, you would have enthusiasm for doing things, you would enjoy eating and being with friends. You wouldn't dread climbing stairs, or having to run after a ball. If you were healthy, you wouldn't have an excess weight problem.
These two illustrations demonstrate what's wrong. There is a relatively simple solution too, except that for 60 years we've been told that the opposite is "more healthy." The problem is in our society, not in the individuals who are sick and getting sicker.
This is a typical older NZ couple. They are both overweight. They may enjoy a walk, but can they run 100 metres?
Diagnosis of Metabolic Syndrome requires that a doctor will diagnose three or more of these common health disorders. Obesity, high blood pressure, low HDL, high triglycerides, high LDL.
This is a pretty rough indicator of poor health, but it's easy to use. By the time we reach the age of 50 most of us will have at least one of those problems. By the time you are 70 you can expect to have all five if "normal" is what you aim to be.
Charles-Eugster a dentist, having retired and becoming "normally ill," he began training at 70. Here he is at age 94 clearly strong and well. He died in his 96th year.
When we say you can add at least 10 or 15 years to your healthy life, by taking control over your diet, exercise and sleep, Charles Eugster is just one example. Choose NOT to be "normal."
