Peripheral Neuropathy

Problems with tingling in your toes, or physical pain in the toes or legs, may be the response of your legs to the poor circulation of blood in your legs. That is particularly related to type two diabetes, excess weight, metabolic syndrome, and lack of basic fitness. It's a signal that shouldn't be ignored.

As a Senior Athlete myself I NOW realise how important this topic is. Thirty years ago while still running marathons (Fit, but eating a high carbohydrate "runners diet") I had sore veins and ulcers on my ankle. Across my feet the veins stood up like thick ropes. Operations to tie off veins in my legs at the knee and in the groin helped, but a few years later the problem came back.

In 2010 my doctor looked at my legs (I had stopped running so far and had put on 20kg) and he asked me to begin saving up for another operation. This procedure was no longer being funded by national health.

Update to now, January 2026, no pain, no ulcers, no sign of swelling in the feet and ankles. I am now exercising much more that I was in 2017. But of course I've had a heart scare (2000), for me a lucky shoulder tap to remind me that I've got work to do. See the section on Exercise.

President Donald Trump, pleads that he is healthy, but he is just typical of American men in their 70's, he's got a heart problem, he's slowly becoming demented, his doctors have admitted that he has a common problem, "venous insufficiency", in other words the blood flow in his legs is poor. So he has swollen ankles, and I expect some pain in bed at night, and some difficulty walking. Not exactly "healthy". This you can avoid. Start with your diet. Start NOW, with Banting.

Peripheral neuropathy refers to damage to your peripheral nerves. It can be caused by different diseases or injury. The main parts of your nervous system include: the central nervous system, or CNS, made up of your brain and spinal cord; and the peripheral nervous system, or PNS, made up of: a special class of twelve paired nerves that branch off of your brain and brainstem, called cranial nerves, to supply areas of your head, face, and neck; and paired spinal nerves that branch off your spinal cord to supply the rest of your body.
